TREATS
The Campaign is part of the ‘Gamified Sports for Teenagers’ initiative, which trained non-Chinese teenagers in gamified sports to promote inclusivity in secondary schools and local neighbourhoods. HKBU (Hong Kong Baptist University) students, enrolled in Dr Yu’s service-learning course TRAN3035 Introduction to Translation Technology, collaborated with these teenagers to create games, film and edit videos, and provide bilingual subtitles with English audio, thereby fostering community engagement and social inclusion.
The participants were formed into five groups, and collaborative brainstormed, created, shot, edited, and produced five trilingual videos on the broad topic of gamified sports throughout the semester. Among them, three videos are produced with English audio and bilingual subtitles in Hindi and Cantonese. The other two videos are produced with English audio and bilingual subtitles in Urdu and Cantonese. During the process of the project, both HKBU students and ethnic minority teenagers learned and developed new skills, including community building, digital media skills, video production, multilingual and multicultural communication, collaborative translation, and subtitling. HKBU students applied the skills learned in class to real-life scenarios and learned new sports skills from ethnic minority teenagers. The service-learning environment developed enabled students from multiple cultural groups to come together within a shared space with mutual and externally specified goals.

Research Assistant
I’m a student dietitian from Hong Kong currently studying in Australia, and I’m delighted to contribute to a project that explores translation, cultural diversity, and multicultural experiences in Hong Kong. Although it’s outside my main field, it’s been a wonderful chance to learn more about cultural communication and inclusivity. My role involves website development and social media management, where I enjoy sharing ideas and presenting stories in creative and accessible ways. This experience has broadened my perspective and strengthened my appreciation for diversity and meaningful connections.
